    Beware the Trojan Pig

    Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

    The Irony of Evolution

The well-deserved demise this week of former district attorney Michael Nifong, who almost ruined the lives of three innocent Duke University lacrosse players, gave new hope to American men. Postpone the celebration, guys. The maker of Trojan condoms just launched a new campaign, called “evolve,” that portrays men, literally, as pigs.

While Fox and CBS refuse to air the “men are pigs” commercial, ABC, NBC, and nine cable networks are on board with it. Everyone responsible for conceiving, writing, producing, storyboarding, and greenlighting this trash — designed by Kaplan Thaler Group — should be ashamed of himself.

“The humor in the advertising spots is our way of getting consumers’ attention and opening up a serious conversation about sexually healthy lifestyles,” said Linda Kaplan Thaler, CEO and chief creative officer. “Some people may be initially surprised by the imagery, but we’re really using the pigs as a metaphor for selfish behavior to call to attention a very important subject.”

“A change in behavior takes a change in attitude,” said Dr. Drew Pinsky, board-certified physician and host of the nationally syndicated radio program Loveline. “The Evolve campaign effectively argues that condoms are a positive symbol of respect for ourselves and our partners as well as a critical component of sexual health and enjoyment—and that not using condoms can bring a dangerous outcome to an otherwise special connection.”

“Evolve is a wake-up call to change attitudes about using condoms and, on a larger scale, the way we think and talk about sexual health in this country,” said Jim Daniels, vice president of marketing for TROJAN®. “Other than abstinence, the best way people can prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection is to use a condom every time they have sex. Unfortunately, that’s just not happening today—single sexually-active Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 use them only about 25 percent of the time. We urgently need to foster healthier attitudes about sexual health and condom use.”

If these decisionmakers are so concerned with changing the sexual behaviors of Americans, they should be just as willing to run the same commercials with the roles reversed: have the female actors play loose, disease-infested sluts, from whom cleancut men must protect themselves by using condoms. Women always demand equality, right?

Tonight, Bill O’Reilly, host of The O’Reilly Factor, asked PR advisor Peter Shankman whether he deemed the Trojan commercial offensive. Shankman answered: “No. Men are pigs.” I think psychiatrists call that projection. As I have opined many times, misandry exists because of the many self-hating men like Shankman tearing down the rest of us.

Imagine the irony of using “evolve” as the title of a male-degrading campaign. It’s not surprising, when you think about it. This is the same country that gives round-the-clock media coverage of any rich blonde who drives her car while drunk … or emerges from it without panties.

    The NoNonsense Bottom Line

Men must rise up to end misandry — by fighting it wherever and whenever it occurs. Here are three suggestions for killing the Trojan pig:

    1. Boycott Trojan condoms
    2. Call and/or email your opinion to Dr. Drew, Linda Kaplan Thaler, and Jim Daniels (609.683.5900 x7311)
    3. Protest against ABC, NBC, and the nine cable networks that air this commercial.

Unless and until men make it clear that they’re not going to tolerate this crap anymore, the advertisers, ad agencies, and TV networks will continue portraying them as worthless and irrelevant. It’s time for a revolution.

    Bad News for Katie Couric

    Thursday, June 14th, 2007

    CBS’s Flawed Business Strategy

Dan Rather’s criticism of his old employer, CBS News, wreaked havoc this week. With Katie Couric in the $16M anchor chair, CBS News is experiencing the worst ratings in its history. Mr. Rather asserted that the Tiffany Network caused the ratings slide in its news division by “dumbing it down and tarting it up.” Les Moonves, president of CBS, shot back by labeling Rather’s comments “sexist.” Sexist? More like spot-on.

I rarely agree with Dan Rather, but I concur with him in this case. Why did CBS dumb down and tart up its news division? It’s not rocket science, folks. Look no further than Paris Hilton. There is no other way to provide round-the-clock coverage of her pathetic life than to use small words and pretty pictures. But, that’s what the masses want, and that’s what all the networks are delivering to them. If you want to know what real sexism is, Mr. Moonves, it’s following a blonde bubblehead from dawn ’til dusk.

There is, however, more to the debacle at CBS Evening News than the blonde-izing of it. This venerable broadcast slot had become a magnet for people in their 60s, mostly males. As such, it is an advertiser’s nightmare and a money-loser for any network. So, CBS News decided to target young females — fresh college graduates up to those in their mid-30s.

CBS’s solution: hire the perky Katie Couric, whom the target audience loved on the Today Show. Unfortunately, the Today Show and hard news are lightyears apart and require different personalities. Even the affable Matt Lauer couldn’t cut it in hard news.

I remember when Katie Couric arrived. Mothers exclaimed that they would watch her with their daughters, marking a new chapter in feminist history. Yeah, right. I couldn’t take more than five minutes of her program. Because she couldn’t think of a signoff, she asked her audience to suggest one — a demonstration of zero authority. Then, she began a series of wardrobe shifts and experiments, then alternated standing and sitting while delivering the news — more evidence that something was awry.

All of this was predictable, because there are three fundamental flaws in CBS’s business strategy:

    1. The news anchor is a dying, obsolescing occupation. There was a time when the network anchor was the source of news and that what he or she delivered was actually news. No longer. We have 24-hour cable news (with all points of view), the Internet, text messages, news radio, and talk radio. By the time the 22 minutes of broadcast evening “news” airs, much of it left-leaning, everything is old. At this juncture, any occupant of the anchor chair is essentially irrelevant; this will be more the case five years hence.
    2. Targeting young females is futile. They don’t watch or care about the news. Hell, they don’t even vote (21 million American women under 44 years old aren’t registered). These women are too busy shopping, manicuring, bar-hopping, and emulating the shallow lifestyle of Paris Hilton. What they know about the war in Iraq comes from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a Bush-hating satirization of the news.
    3. Katie Couric is not serious-news material. I just cannot take Katie seriously — and not because of her gender. It’s her personality. I like her personality, for light fare. That’s what she’s good at. I would have no problem getting hard news from Michelle Malkin or Megyn Kelly of Fox News, or Norah O’Donnell of MSNBC. They are attractive and able to discuss serious subjects with ease and authority. Katie Couric cannot.

    The NoNonsense Bottom Line

Katie Couric — the wrong person in a vanishing job, seeking a nonexistent female audience — is now delivering news to a dwindling crowd of 60-something men while the ratings plummet. Hiring Katie Couric was a fundamental violation of Marketing 101, at a sunk cost of $16M per year and untold opportunity costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The situation at CBS News is unworkable, and Les Moonves will have to deal with the inevitable, sooner or later. He keeps saying he wants to give Katie “more time,” but that is a ruse, a stalling tactic. Calling Dan Rather’s remarks sexist is pure sophistry and defensiveness.

Eventually, and maybe sooner than we think, Mr. Moonves will be forced to give Katie Couric the bad news: “Good night and good luck.”

    Are You a Feminarcissist?

    Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

    Barometer of American Values

Paris Hilton isn’t the problem; she’s just a barometer of American values. A highschool dropout with a GED and lots of plastic surgery, she is nothing more than the creation of a shallow, aimless society in search of itself: the real problem. America’s endless obsession with this professional attention-whore is more evidence (remember Britney, Lindsay, Rosie, and Anna Nicole?) that its priorities are screwed up.

People who seriously care whether Paris should have gone to jail, how she might be surviving in jail, what Aunt Kyle thinks, what sister Nicky thinks, or what Rick and Kathy are planning for their daughter’s getting-out-of-jail party in Las Vegas should be examining the meaning of their own lives — if that’s possible.

Narcissism is an epidemic in America, and Hilton is the most-visible example of it: she spends all her time admiring and kissing her reflection, while Americans hold up the mirror. Her immature behavior, which, at one time was considered shameful, brings her fame. Americans, however, just won’t break Paris’s mirror. If they would ignore Paris, she would disappear. But, they won’t … so she won’t.

In the scheme of things, Paris Hilton’s life is irrelevant. She is nothing and contributes nothing. Worse, Americans’ focus on Paris prevents them from seeing a real and harmful form of self-absorption: feminism. Feminism began with the valid goal of bringing equality to women. Alas, over the years, it has morphed into a pathos of blind conceit and misandry. Modern feminists have almost total disregard for the consequences of their actions. They are feminarcissists.

    Moms Know Best

The other morning, I was reading through my local newspaper, the San Jose Mercury News. The first snippet in the Dear Abby column caught my eye: “Woman seeking a child should rethink her motives.” A 27-year-old woman declared to Abby that, if she doesn’t have a very strong relationship in place by the time she reaches 30, she plans to make a trip to the sperm bank in pursuit of single motherhood. She sought Abby’s opinion about the selfishness of her quest. Abby opined that a child deserves two parents. In my opinion, any woman who even ponders life as an unwed mother is selfish.

Feminarcissism abounds. On May 31st, ABCNews.com reported an unusual custody fight, over frozen embryos, now headed to the Texas Supreme Court. It seems that Augusta and Randy Roman, now divorced, are embroiled in a battle over their future unborn children. When these former lovebirds couldn’t conceive naturally, they harvested 13 of her eggs, fertilized six, and froze three. They both signed a consent form stipulating that, in the event of divorce, the fertilized eggs would be destroyed.

Of course, the former Mrs. Roman changed her mind, went back to female-ly court, and won custody of the eggs. A true feminarcissist, she wants what she wants, when she wants it — and to hell with everyone else. She cares not about the father or the child. It’s all about her, and — as expected — the misandrist female-ly court agreed. Mr. Roman countersued. Now, a bunch of state jurists will redecide what these two already had decided. How does this make you feel about prenups?

The week before the embryo story emerged, I was within seconds of appearing on Fox News Channel’s Your World with Neil Cavuto for my weekly jousting match with Lis Wiehl, when an outbreak of fighting in Tripoli, Lebanon unexpectedly preempted our segment. We were going to debate the selfishness of Frieda Birnbaum, the 60-year-old psychologist from New Jersey, who underwent invitro fertilization in South Africa and then delivered twin boys — making her the oldest American woman to give birth. It isn’t even clear that she used her own egg.

Six years ago, Dr. Birnbaum gave birth to a son using the same science experiment. Her main reason for doing this: to show women in their 50s that it can be done! Is this a reason to become a mother? Of course not. Becoming pregnant isn’t meant to be a test of physical achievement, like winning a marathon. It’s supposed to be about building a loving, integral family. But, moms know best.

Should a psychologist be wiser about healthy motives and behaviors than the general public? One would think. In my opinion, this doctor is sicker than her patients. Her 33-year-old son and 29-year-old daughter are on the record as unhappy about their mother’s late-life birthing. And, what of Mr. Birnbaum, her husband of 38 years? His opinion isn’t clear. I’m betting he had little say in the matter.

When I announced my imminent appearance on Fox News to debate Frieda Birnbaum’s delivery of twins, a good friend of mine sent me the following letter, in horror:

My parents were in their 40s when I was born. I was thankful to “be there” for them as they got older, but my dad had health problems that kept him from playing sports with me (a stroke and heart attacks). He passed away when I was 28. It was tough watching them age every time I came home from a college break. But, if they were 15 years older [like Frieda Birnbaum and her husband], it should probably be against the law.

For a 60-year-old woman to give birth defies the very essence of both parenting and childhood. To be a 10-year-old child with 70-year-old parents is so ridiculous. Does this woman think she is raising caregivers? Her sons never will be normal, nor will their relationships, nor will their offspring. The ramifications are horrible.

This is the heartfelt perspective of a child born to older parents — a perspective that feminarcissists wouldn’t understand. By the same token, a woman implanting a frozen embryo in her uterus, against the father’s wishes, will produce an equally devastating affect on her offspring.

Because of the 50% divorce rate (women bring 70% of divorce actions) and the escalating out-of-wedlock birthrate (30% for whites, 70% for blacks), most children in America are raised by mothers. The female-ly courts encourage it, and the feminarcissists applaud it. But, such selfishness causes children and their fathers to suffer, and the fabric of society to weaken.

A home without two actively involved parents is not a healthy alternative lifestyle, despite what the feminarcissists espouse. It takes years to discover the damage done to the children whose mothers reproduced like human Xerox machines. Self-absorption is as self-absorption does.

    The NoNonsense Bottom Line

If you want to live a selfish life like Paris Hilton, I don’t care. But, if you choose to extend that feminarcissism into motherhood — like Frieda Birnbaum, Augusta Roman, and the 27-year-old who wrote to Dear Abby — I care a lot. Your obsession with yourself, and our legal system’s pathetic indulgence of your attitude, now affects my society … and me.

In this era of shallow existence, some women — especially young women — literally don’t have the reference points to evaluate their own beliefs or actions. Accordingly, if you are contemplating motherhood and cannot logically forsee the long-term consequences to all parties involved, here’s a three-condition feminarcissism test that will make it clear.

    Never become a mother unless:

    1. Both you and your man are READY to become parents
    2. Both you and your man are WILLING to become parents
    3. Both you and your man are ABLE to become parents.

If you cannot meet all three conditions above, and you still choose to deliver a child, you are a feminarcissist. But, you are not a mother.

    Radio: Why Men Tolerate Nonsense

    Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

I define nonsense as the female double standard of wanting equality at work and privileges outside of it. Actually, women want — and get — privileges at work, too. So, the female quest for equality is really a joke. But, as long as men acquiesce to female demands, they have nothing to complain about!

On June 5, 2007, I appeared as a guest on America’s Earliest Morning Show with Peter Tilden, which aired at 11:35PM PT on LA’s KABC 790AM, Sirius 143, and XM 124.

Peter Tilden’s theme was “why men tolerate female double standards” — piggybacking onto my 06.01.07 debate with Lis Wiehl on FNC’s Your World with Neil Cavuto.
